10/6/2007 to 9/7/2008 John Adams Elder Civil War Art Exhibition "John Adams Elder: Fredericksburg's Artist of the Civil War", The Fredericksburg Area Museum's newest exhibition, will feature portraits, landscapes and genre scenes by this important local artist. Born in Fredericksburg in 1833, Elder studied under Emanuel Leutze (of Washington Crossing the Delaware fame). Elder fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War, and later continued his career as an artist, painting portraits of prominent figures of the Civil War such as Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. Come see some of these fantastic paintings and learn about our local "artist of the Civil War". $ Fredericksburg Area Museum

1/27/2008 to 3/1/2008 For the month of February the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts (FCCA) presents its first "Regional Art Show" of 2008. This all media, juried exhibit will be featured in the FCCA Frederick Gallery, 813 Sophia Street, Fredericksburg, VA. The works of Brenda Russell and Darlene Wilkinson will be on display in the FCCA Members’ Gallery. The shows open 27 January and run through 1 March with a First Friday Opening Reception on 1 February from 6-8:30pm. Despite her subtle attempts to snare him, he doesn't seem to be taking the hint. Jimmy, a lovable and irrepressible paperclip salesman sets his heart on Millie. A love triangle begins. In the end, wild and crazy “jazz baby” Muzzy is needed to clear the air and match up lovers once and for all. 3/5/2008 to 5/30/2008 Memorable Madonna: Art Institute's Mother & Child Spotlight Exhibition Sometime in the early 1890s Gari Melchers began a lifelong preoccupation with painting mothers in a wide range of attitudes with their children. The Art Institute of Chicago’s version is surely Melchers’ most beloved and widely recognized example. Although his image speaks of the universal mother figure, having a connection with all mothers, it also makes reference to the Classical notion of the Virgin Mary, solemnly raising her infant in symbolic offering to the world. It is a timeless and unforgettable icon of maternal love. Related paintings and preparatory works drawn from the Gari Melchers Home and Studio collection will accompany this important loan. Perspective, composition, depth of field, lighting, and equipment options will all be discussed. Outdoor shooting on Belmont’s grounds will be paired with classroom demonstration. A basic knowledge of photography and the use of your camera's exposure controls are recommended. The performance will include selections from: Mozartiana—George Balanchine’s glorious masterpiece is a ballet of spiritual wonder and joyous reverence featuring Tchaikovsky’s delightful musical homage to Mozart. Other Places—Choreographed by Richmond Ballet Artistic Director, Stoner Winslett, Other Places is set to one of the most lushly romantic scores in orchestral repertoire, Anton Dvorak’s “Serenade for Strings, OP. 22” and is a reflective and expressive evocation of Romantic lyricism. The ballet marries both classical and modern ballet vocabulary with the Dvorak score in a series o f episodes featuring six couples. 4/25/2008 Pleasure Gardens: From Cottages to Castles As Garden Week in Virginia winds down it is time to treat yourself to an exciting program that will reveal the secrets of garden design from one of the most respected designers working today. Phillip Watson, host of QVC’s “Phillip Watson’s Garden Party”, and of PBS’s “The New Garden” will give an illustrated lecture that focuses on the garden as an extension of the house, be it grand or humble. Following the lecture, Mr. Watson will demonstrate his skill in creating containers using unique and exciting plant material that will wow you all season long. The Art Institute of Chicago’s version is surely Melchers’ most beloved and widely recognized example. Although his image speaks of the universal mother figure, having a connection with all mothers, it also makes reference to the Classical notion of the Virgin Mary, solemnly raising her infant in symbolic offering to the world. 3/8/2008 to 5/3/2008 John Elder Art Experience for Children Series Children ages 6 – 12 are invited to join Lindsey Victoria, Fine Arts graduate of the University of Mary Washington, as she shares her talents through a series of hands-on creative programs. Ms. Victoria will draw inspiration from the widely acclaimed exhibit John Adams Elder: Fredericksburg’s Artist of the Civil War, currently on display at the museum. 5/1/2008 to 6/1/2008 Belvedere's 36th Strawberry Harvest Our 36th annual strawberry crop should ripen in early May. We are busy most every month of the year growing strawberries. During the summer months, new fields are planted and current fields are nurtured for next spring's harvest. Special care is given during the early fall period as that is when strawberries set their flower buds for next year's crop. Through the winter months we keep the plants cozy with special blankets.
