3/1/2009 to 3/28/2009 "Powerful & Fragile Earth" Art Exhibition The Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts (FCCA) presents "Powerful & Fragile Earth" during March 2009. This all media, juried exhibit will be featured in the FCCA Frederick Gallery, 813 Sophia Street, Fredericksburg, VA. The VCU Thesis Show of Eric May will be on display in the FCCA Members’ Gallery. Shows run 1–28 March with a First Friday Opening Reception on 6 March from 6-8:30pm. The exhibits are free and open to the public daily from 12-4pm (except Tuesday and Wednesday when the gallery is closed). FCCA is also open from 11am-4pm on Saturday. In these times of questionable grant and corporate funding, it is a fabulous thing that the agency can count on this secure source of community support as each year, hundreds of people join together to raise money, contribute goods and services, promote the event, and come together on three different event days to have fun and support the growth of our programs. There are many sponsorship opportunities for companies. In addition, the agency will be soliciting prizes as well as teams of four (friends, family members and co-workers) to raise money by collecting pledges. Voices in the Storm: Spotsylvania's Great Trial No place in America suffered more during war than Spotsylvania. Children, churches, parents, and homesteads--all were caught in a maelstrom that transformed them. On Saturday March 28, members of the community, Massaponax Baptist Church, and the National Park Service come together to tell the story of Spotsylvania’s residents during the Civil War. 5/2/2009 to 5/3/2009 145th Spotsylvania Commemorative Reenactment Come see history come alive as reenactors recreate the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. See the cannons belch their fiery destruction, horses charge and infantry struggle to take command of the field. Three battle scenarios will be played out just as they were done 145 years ago in May 1864. 5/10/2009 Washington's Farewell to Mother 220th Anniversary of "The Blessing". In early March 1789, George Washington visited his mother, Mary, at her home. He was waiting for the call to be President and asked her blessing on that event. This farewell to his mother will be recreated as part of our tour for this Mother's Day event. It explores the doctor/patient relationship, physical fitness, and health and healing through the beloved narratives of Norman Rockwell produced for the Lambert, Upjohn and American Optical Companies in the last century, and now owned by the Pfizer Collection. In addition to the eleven outstanding original canvases by Rockwell are featured 14 of today’s preeminent illustrators for the pages of Healthy Living, Men’s Health, Newsweek, The New York Times and The New Yorker.
